Voki created for ELFADA

This speaking avatar was created during the ELFADA session on 18th April as demonstration of how to create a Voki and embed media into a blog post.

Creating a Speaking Avatar and Inserting into a Blog Post

Voki is a free web tool that allows you to create your own avatar that speaks and says whatever you want it to say. It is very easy to use.

What is a Voki?

Vox + Loki = Voki

Vox is Latin for voice

Loki is a prankster character in Norse mythology

Create a Voki account.

Click on REGISTER and fill out form. Click on SIGN UP.Voki will send you an email. To activate your account click on the activation link in the email. You can now create your Voki (speaking avatar).

Click on Create button on menu. Click on Create a New Voki.

Customise Your Character. You can choose a character. You can change the look (e.g. hair, clothing and bling).

Give it a Voice. You can use your own voice using the microphone, or you can type in what you want to say and choose a voice (from drop-down menu).

Click on Publish.

When you have published your speaking avatar you can email it to friends or embed it in your blog post.

Adding your talking avatar to your blog

Completely write your post including adding title, text and images. Click on save draft, preview your post and make all necessary edits.

Once you have published your Voki grab the embed code by clicking on Copy:

Click on HTML Tab on your blog post.

Paste the embed code into your post where you want it to appear.

Publish your blog post.

Don’t click back to Visual Tab before publishing as it may break the embed code.

Introduction to PhotoFiltre

PhotoFiltre is an easy to use photo editing program. PhotoFiltre allows you to do simple or advanced adjustments to an image. The menus and toolbars give you easy access to the many functions and options.

Installation is simple and quick. You can download free version here.

Resizing an image is one of the most common procedures we do with pictures. Digital cameras produce large-sized photographs to ensure good quality; images downloaded from the internet are often large files; we often need to reduce the size of a picture before publishing on the internet (e.g. Blog), inserting into a document, or sending via email.

Opening an image

Open the image you want to resize using File – Open or click on the Open icon on the toolbar and look for it in the directory where you have saved the picture.

 Resizing image

Go to Image menu – Image size.

The dialogue box gives you the original size in pixels.

Make sure Preserve aspect ratio is ticked, so when you reduce the size the picture will not deform.

Enter a value in width, for example 400, and see how the other values change automatically.

Click OK. See how its size has decreased.

Look at the picture and decide if you are satisfied with the size.

You can undo unwanted change – use the undo arrow or go to Edit menu.

Save the image

Once you have resized your picture, use the Save As to save the new file rather than using Save, which will overwrite your original file.

You can save as type  ‘png’ or ‘jpeg’

Challenge #1

  • Use PhotoFiltre to resize one of your own photos, or find a photo on the internet. (Remember copyright and Creative Commons)
  • Post about the process on your blog, with your edited image.

 Challenge #2

  • Choose another editing option/function
  • Find a suitable image to edit
  • Edit your image
  • Post a blog about your editing process and a before and after image.
  • Remember to resize images before embedding into your blog.

Comment on “Ten Steps to Blogging”

I have just set up my blog using “Ten Steps to Blogging” with help from Jo.

The task at Step 4 is to write and publish a post.  So here goes.

There is a lot to learn but getting started is the most important step. There is a lot of advice about blogging and it can be daunting. I will customise my blog over time, making it more useful and more to my liking.

I feel like a student, so this activity may help me know how the project participants will feel when they are setting up their blogs and writing their posts.
